A Nerja man, 68 years old, suffered a heart attack on Sunday evening. He had to be airlifted to the hospital from his home in Calle Bolivia to the Sports Complex Enrique López Cuenca, where the emergency helicopter had to land to transport him to the hospital at the capital city.
Local police, Guardia Civil and a SAS ambulance around 8:00 PM had to coordinate a tactical operation so that the man could be airlifted to Malaga’s Hospital Clínico given his critical condition.
Antonio Jesús Valverde, member of Nerja’s Protección Civil and eye witness, said that the patient had to be treated by Emergency Services at first, to render his condition stable enough to be airlifted. “This type of patient’s transfer has to be accomplished as quickly as possible, and it took almost one hour to airlift him”, he said.
Official sources from Málaga’s Hospital Clínico said that when the patient arrived, he was in critical condition and that he is under observation at the hospital’s ICU. A source from the town’s City Council has confirmed on Monday that the patient is Vicente Ortega, Rio de la Miel’s mayor.
