Nerja Council is moving ahead with the project to construct a bicycle path between Nerja and Maro. This project was selected by the Junta de Andalucía as part of their program “Ciudad Amable”. Antonio Garcia, Nerja’s councilman for Infrastructures, held a meeting with the provincial delegate for Public Works and Housing, Manuel Garcia, to narrow down guidelines, execution deadlines and the transfer of public funding that the project will be endowed with.
In this regard, the councilman has stated that the bike path between the two towns will receive a grant of more than 400.000 euros, as part of the European Union’s fund for regional development. From this amount, the Town Council will also have to determine how much they will need to contribute towards the project, although they currently estimate that the amount will be between 20 and 25% of the total amount needed to complete the works. Since the money is a grant from the European Union, the funds will have to be justified by June 2015, which sets a tight deadline for the project. The Town Council will draft the project.
Antonio Garcia said that Nerja is not only part of the project “Ciudad Amable” but also is the only town in Andalucía that is not a provincial capital that has been included in the first phase of implementation of the Director Plan of Andalusian Bicycle Paths. This plan will develop until 2025 to complete a network of bike routes throughout the region.
