Taxi associations meet to tackle ongoing problem

3 March 2014
Political representatives from Nerja, Rincon de la Victoria, Algarrobo, Sayalonga, Competa, Canillas de Albaida, Frigiliana and the Costa Tropical held a meeting at the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol-Axarquía with  several associations of taxi drivers of the province to tackle problems related to picking up passengers in the airport and in Malaga’s cruise port for transfers.
Taxi drivers from the Malaga city oppose their fellow province’s drivers picking up passengers in the airport and seaport “having to use force, sometimes” according to several groups of the Axarquía region.
After listening to the workers’ complaints, the group’s president, Oscar Medina, said the problem was “very serious”, since it causes economic problems to the region. He has asked that the Junta de Andalucía to maintain “the continuity, duration and full implementation” of the Andalusian decree 11/85, which allows a taxi driver from any town, under contract, to pick up passengers at Malaga airport and cruise port.
The agreement will also be moved to the Mancomunidad de Municipios of the Costa del Sol Occidental, Costa Tropical and Campo de Gibraltar as well as to the 31 towns that are part of the Mancomunidad Axárquica. The Councilwoman for Transport in Nerja, reminded them that the town council approved a motion in December 2012 which was transferred to the representative for Public Works, and to the Territorial Delegate of Malaga. The motion opposed “the very unjust pretensions of the taxi drivers group of Malaga.”
