Spanish tourists overnight stays in the province of Malaga have grown from January to October by 3.62%, with a total of 5.155.000 nights, 179.953 more than during last year in the same time frame. This increase is higher than Andalucía’s growth (+2.3%) and changes the negative transfer trend happening in Spain (-29.7%).
Malaga continues the positive trend in national tourism, which has been one of the most affected sectors due to the economic situation. During the first ten months of this year, 1.767.270 guests have stayed in Malaga hotels, that is, 34.772 more (+2.01) than during the same period in 2012.
Elías Bendodo, president of the Tourism Board of Costa del Sol, has remarked that this increase of Spanish tourists is due to the fact that these are “changing their travelling habits and are visiting closer destinations, instead of travelling to mid-distance international destinations”.
He has stressed that Malaga is a destination that offers a more comprehensive range of leisure activities, such as golf, cultural travel, active or interior tourism, among national competitors and a “more pronounced” quality-price ratio.
Regarding towns, significant increases have been noticed in the year’s totals, especially in province’s towns such as Ronda, Torremolinos and Nerja, with a growth rate between 5.2 and 17% in the number of tourists who stay at hotels. Many of these are flying into Malaga airport and arranging private taxi transfers.
