Taxi drivers from across the province and especially the ones from coastal towns such as Nerja, went on strike this Wednesday from 9 AM to 2 PM in the parking lot of the Palacio de Deportes “José María Martín Carpena” in Málaga.
The strike had been convened to protest the proposed decree by the Junta de Andalucía that allows taxi drivers from the capital city to pick up passengers who have pre-hired services from towns in which cab drivers work at the airport, port and the María Zambrano train station, as told by Europa Press.
Olivia Rodríguez, president of the Federation of Independent Taxi Cabs of Tourist Towns of Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Mijas, Nerja, Estepona and Manilva has criticized this decree, because “it is going to deregulate cabs in Malaga City in detriment of other taxi cab drivers all over Andalucia”.
Therefore, Rodríguez made it clear that taxi drivers from the province categorically oppose both the principle of modulated reciprocity and the future joint area of service in the Malaga airport area.
Olivia Rodríguez regretted that the regional administration only listens to taxi drivers when they strike. “The council has not called us to discuss the conflict, though we have asked in every possible way: by requesting meetings, sending petitions from representatives of associations that serve more than six million citizens of Andalucía, motions of support from town councils and even, we have gone to the Office of Mobility in person”.
As for any inconvenience to customers, the spokeswoman has remarked that the strike was called “to defend our rights and never to inconvenience customers, whom we want to take care of and protect, and for whose rights we will also fight for on Wednesday”.
